5 Tips For Your First Day In a New Job

You got the job! 

Congratulations, all your hard work has paid off and you can relax, right? 

Not exactly. Now it is time to prepare for making the best possible first impression on your first day.

1. First impressions count People initially judge others based on appearance and body language. So don't fall at the first hurdle by turning up wearing something inappropriate. Keep in line with the dress code and make sure you feel comfortable. Try to keep an eye out for what employees at the office are wearing when you go for your interview. But if in doubt, make sure you ask what the dress code is. If the dress code is casual, err on the side of caution during your first week, or until you’ve really got a feel for the place. It's always better to be over-dressed than under-dressed. Wear shoes you are comfortable in. If you can't walk in them, don't wear them. 

2. Be confident & demonstrate your willingness to learn Be confident and draw on your past experience and successes. Be keen to learn new responsibilities and don't be scared to ask questions. It is better to ask at the beginning, rather than down the line when people assume you should already know. 

3. Listen to what is going on around you You'll be surprised how much you learn from listening to discussions around the office that will help you understand how the company and different teams function. 

4. Get to know your colleagues Show your friendly side and chat with your colleagues at lunch or in the kitchen. The sooner you get to know people, the less daunting work will be. Try to attend any social events to are invited to as this will help you get to know people outside your immediate team. 

5. Arrive on time This one goes without saying but there is absolutely no excuse for being late on your first day. Leave yourself lots of extra time for the first few days to scope out on average how long your journey will take. In regards to the end of the day, don’t be the first one out of the office. Nothing shows a lack of interest in a new job more than a speedy exit at the end of the day.
