Preparing for an interview, which may be for the job of your dreams, and could change your life is critical – fail to prepare and you prepare to fail. Whilst background checking company information is vital - selecting the right look and the right attire is of the utmost importance. First impressions count and an interview is showtime giving you the ability to wow or underwhelm whichever you choose.
Grooming – if you are a woman a manicure with a non- offensive colour, clean hair and nicely done make-up is critical to being selected for a second round interview or being selected for the job. If you are a man, a clean shave, nicely combed hair and manicured nails are critical grooming components. Not following these sends a message to your prospective employer that there is a lack of care, you don’t pay attention to detail, or that you simply aren’t polished. It tends to distract the interviewer from focusing on what you have to offer the company, so pay attention before it is too late.
Make Up – should be fresh and natural. Accenture on an eye or a lip – not both. Your look should be as natural as possible. Less is more in this case. Scent – your scent can have an enormous effect on your interviewer. There is nothing less appealing than walking into an interview smelling like smoke or too much perfume or cologne. Scents are memorable and you want it to be a pleasant one. Remember – less is more.
Shoes – if you are wearing heels make sure that you can walk comfortably and confidently in them. They do not have to be 5” high – the goal is to look professional, feel professional and reflect the brand you are interviewing with. You should have the foresight to expect that your interview will go well and the interviewer to walk you through the office, introducing you to their colleagues along the way. If walking in those heels is trouble for you, this could be the demise of your candidacy!
Piercings – earrings are nice, but should never overtake your ears (man or woman), and piercings elsewhere should be removed for your interviews. Win that job and respect the process with a professional foot forward, then feel free to show them your piercings and creative side if the brand embraces it.
Culture – Mirror your audience – be thoughtful and ensure that your dress is targeted to the company and brand you are meeting. Always better to go with a more corporate look for your first interview, rather than be under dressed.
The Part – make sure you dress the part. First impressions are important and you want to make the client know that you understand their customer and culture – don’t overdo it and remember that you do need to be comfortable. You will radiate positivity and confidence when you are dressed the part. Dress well, feel well.
Accessories – never over accesorise. Too much jewellery, too many rings, too big of a watch, too many necklaces can all take away from what is critical and that is you and the experience you offer to bring. Anything too quirky can be perceived as too quirky and may be offputting.
Be Professional – your attire should not be overly revealing or bordering on inappropriate. As a woman your dress or skirt should not be too short, nor your shirt or top cut too low. For men, make sure that your clothes are properly tailored.
Smile and Greeting – two vital ingredients are to wear your best possible smile – warmth and positivity go a very long way AND to practise your greeting, handshake and introduction – remember eye contact is key. Black – when in doubt – wear black!!
