As another year draws to a close, it’s important to take time to reflect on all that you’ve achieved professionally throughout the year. Your job is a huge part of your life and you should enjoy your career. That being said, it’s important to take time over the festive season to unwind from your busy year, returning to work restored and ready for the next year

Creating a healthy balance between your career and personal life is a challenge, nonetheless critical in improving your physical, emotional and mental health, as well as your career health. Our desire to succeed professionally can leave us deprioritising our own wellbeing and often we don’t realise until we’re in the midst of it.

A good work-life balance has countless positive effects, including minimising stress and burnout, promoting overall wellbeing, and enhancing job satisfaction. But how do you achieve a good work-life balance?

1. Prioritise your health

Your health is your most valuable asset. Overworking while feeling unwell, whether mentally or physically, can prevent recovery and lead to additional time off in the future. Prioritising your health reduces stress and improves overall wellbeing.

Simple steps can make a difference: regular exercise, such as a 30-minute walk during lunch or short workouts, can improve both physical and mental health. Healthy routines help maintain energy levels and resilience for both work and personal life.

2. Plan your time

Work-life balance is personal and flexible. Some days may focus more on work, while others allow for hobbies and time with loved ones. Planning your workday enhances focus and productivity, making it easier to disconnect at the end of the day without stress.

Equally, planning time with friends and family ensures you recharge socially and emotionally. Alone time is important, but nurturing relationships can provide significant energy and wellbeing benefits.

3. Don’t be afraid to unplug

Technology has blurred the line between business and personal life, creating expectations of constant accessibility. However, checking emails during weekends or holidays is rarely necessary. Preparing a handover and setting an out-of-office message ensures you can fully disconnect.

The whole point of taking leave is to turn off, decompress and recharge your batteries; always being ‘on’ is counterproductive. And remember, holiday days are a legal requirement for a reason – use them!!

4. Pursue a career you love

"Do what you love and you'll never work another day in your life” may be a cliché statement, but that doesn’t make it less true. It’s not healthy to get the Sunday blues every week, dreading going to work the next day. Finding satisfaction in your work is key to long-term wellbeing. Work should challenge you, make you feel appreciated, and support your growth as a person.
